A couple of years ago it made pretty big news that Anna Wintour was consulting with the Tony Awards about, as the Vogue editor-in-chief might say, “lifting” the style of the Broadway stars on their big night. Well, now Ms. Wintour’s participation doesn’t make the news anymore, but it is completely obvious her fine hand is involved. In fact, in a snippet I saw on the Twitter red carpet live stream—yes, Twitter, they are not quite ready for prime time—Anna took a moment with the hosts to talk about the floral backdrop of the red carpet. The vibrant hedge had roses in the color of the rainbow running down the center in celebration of Pride Month.
It was a beautiful statement of support with all the politics surrounding the flag that have cropped up this 50th Anniversary of Pride celebrations. Anna said it was her daughter Bea Schaffer’s idea. I feel like she might have run with it and shared memos with the Broadway stars to celebrate with colorful ensembles, because the attire was as vibrant as I can ever recall and there was jewelry to match. It was not the usual New York black ensemble after black ensemble. One thing that has not changed about the event is that the vast majority of the jewels come from local favorites. See the best of the evening below.
