There was a somber mood hanging over the usually high-spirited Grammy Awards. The news of Kobe Bryant and his daughter’s death, along with several others in a helicopter crash near Los Angeles earlier in the day, was a heart wrenching loss for so many in the audience who knew the basketball superstar personally and legions of others who admired his legendary Lakers career playing at the Staples Center, the very location where the Grammys took place. Alicia Keys pulled everyone together with her beautiful opening about Kobe and the healing power of music.
It was a different night in other, much lighter, ways as well. The evening was dominated by new talent. There was no Beyoncé or Lady Gaga or Taylor Swift in attendance to set the red carpet on fire. It was about the next generation and new talent including Lizzo, Billie Eilish, FKA Twigs and Ariana Grande. Everyone was bejeweled in ways that reflected their personal sense of style.
