March 2, 2025—Vintage clothing has been taking over the red carpet lately. Fashion stylists are working overtime to find all kinds of great runway looks from yesteryear with a cult following that goes wide when its re-worn. Well, now vintage jewelry is having a moment too. The Oscar red carpet proved it with an impressive display of old treasures.
The amazing thing about this vintage revival is that it is not limited to one or even two eras, the way it was in the 1990s and early 2000s when the focus was late 19th century and Art Deco. This time it includes jewels from any number of periods. The Oscars illustrated this point with everything from a Tiffany necklace from the early 20th century to another Tiffany style designed by Angela Cummings in the 1980s.
The element that ties all the pieces together is not just their advanced age, but it is the character that each one has. See what I mean in the looks below.
Elle Fanning unabashedly loves fashion and jewelry and clearly gets great joy in dressing up for the red carpet.
On this outing, she paired a new Givenchy gown, the first designed by Sarah Burton, with a 1958 Cartier necklace featuring garlands set with round brilliants.
Best Actress winner Mikey Madison wore an openwork platinum and diamond Tiffany necklace, made around 1909, with a Dior gown inspired by a 1956 design.
While the actresses’ dress and necklace came from different periods, they are both timeless looks.
Gal Gadot shone in a gold necklace designed by Angela Cummings for Tiffany in 1980. It is composed of 18K gold and set with 433 diamonds in platinum.
The white metal is delicately engraved along the edges to echo the pattern of the yellow gold. Each one of the segments move in order for the jewel to lie naturally on the wearer.
Colman Domingo is always pushing the style envelope. For the Oscars he accented his red and black suit with a couple of gold vintage pieces from the Boucheron archive. A 1956 ribbon clip with basket weave pattern decorated his lapel. The gold rope chains tassel bracelet with diamond accents was made about 10 years earlier.
The actor transformed Fuzzy, the Leopard Cat ring into a pinky ring. Diamonds and emeralds are among the gems on the pink gold and black lacquer jewel.
Raffey Cassidy wore vintage diamond graduated earrings set with round marquise diamonds from Joseph Saidian & Sons.
Wicked costume designer, Paul Tazewell, really stood out as stylish in a giant 1950s diamond brooch by Belperron set with over 45 carats of round and baguette-cut diamonds.
Robert Downey Jr., sported a cheerful vintage ruby and diamond Two Fruit Clip designed by Jean Schlumberger for Tiffany in 1956. Former First Lady Jackie Kennedy received the same design from President John Kennedy in 1960 to celebrate the birth of their son. Her jewel is among the collection at the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library & Museum in Boston.
Robert presented the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor to Kieran Culkin, who did not wear vintage, but a custom KWIAT Fred Leighton jabot pin featuring a Colombian emerald, purple sapphire and peridot set in platinum. The gems represent the birthstones of his wife, Jazz Charton, and their two children.
