March 15, 2023—If I could sit in on just one prep session of any star and stylist, I would have to choose Rihanna and Jahleel Weaver. Their work is full of surprises, seems to be without too much literal historical precedent and always includes lots of jewelry.
For the Oscars, I can’t help but wonder if they used things that might have been Super Bowl rejects. Vanessa Friedman reported in The New York Times that she had been told by a couple of fashion brands that they created custom-made outfits for the performance. None of the ones she had heard about were worn. But, then again, recycling clothes from the Super Bowl to the Oscars doesn’t seem like something Riri and Jahleel would do. The dynamic duo appears to get too much pleasure from putting together looks specifically for an event.
They also like to have a lot of things custom made and I am not just talking about the clothes. A couple of jewels were custom made for Hollywood’s big night. Find out about the treasures Rihanna wore for Oscar arrivals, the performance, post-performance and the Gold Party below.
Look 1: Oscar Arrivals
In a way only Rihanna can, the star was absolutely the last person to walk on the arrivals carpet. In fact, the show had started by the time she turned up.
She literally and metaphorically shut it down in a custom Alaïa sheer and leather bondage peek-a-boo gown and Moussaieff jewels. Riri, who was nominated for her song “Lift Me Up” from Wakanda Forever, had orangey brown diamond pendant earrings, an important orangey brown diamond ring and a dark brown diamond dress ring.
Look 2: Oscar Performance
For her moving performance of “Lift Me Up” during the broadcast, Riri wore a custom Martin Margiela sparkly top, pants and long gloves with layers upon layers of De Beers diamond jewels.
The look included three necklaces with diamonds totaling just under 100-carats.
She sported four different styles of diamond earrings and a 5.74-carat diamond ring.
One of the most stunning pieces among all the treasures was the over 13-carat Alchemist of Light ‘Frozen Capture’ Bracelet (seen above).
Look 3: Oscar Ceremony Audience
After her rousing performance, Rihanna changed into a custom Bottega Veneta ensemble and posed briefly with a radiant A$AP Rocky before taking her seat in the audience.
The crisp outfit included a mint green wrap-around shearling stole top, matching skirt, gloves and shoes. For her jewels she chose Verdura earrings and a custom diamond anklet from Briony Raymond.
The emerald and diamond earrings Rihanna wore come from Verdura’s “Stardust” collection.
The legendary Italian jeweler, who was based in New York City, launched the line with diamond stars way back in 1944 after his dear friend composer Cole Porter commissioned a bracelet for his wife Linda.
The Briony Raymond jewel Rihanna wore was a lavish Posey bracelet converted into an anklet for the singer (seen above).
The 105-carat diamond jewel is a glamorous follow-up to the Super Bowl style platinum and diamond ring Briony made for Rihanna to wear after her performance.
Look 4: The Gold Party
Most people got out their coverage of Rihanna’s first three looks before these blurry images of her fantastic fourth ensembled appeared. I waited, because I know the singer’s Oscar night ways. Back in 2019, she sported Emmanuel Tarpin earrings at Jay Z and Beyoncé’s annual after-party, dubbed the Gold Party, and catapulted the independent jeweler to fame.
This year she—I have to say it—shone bright like a diamond in a Valentino custom-made two piece number and Bayco diamond jewels.
Her Bayco pieces included a White Rose platinum necklace set with 95.81-carats of diamonds, matching earrings and a three stone ring.
The piece de resistance was a necklace (seen above), Bayco converted into a 250.61-carat belly chain.
