The Blockbuster Jewels at Cannes

Hollywood stars turned up the sparkle on the red carpet

May 23, 2022—Cannes has a long history of over-the-top red-carpet styles that are always a lot of fun to watch. One week into this year’s film festival has felt very much business as usual. Gorgeous gowns and statement suits (we are looking at you Julia Roberts) have been paired with giant gems and High Jewels from the biggest names in the business. What has made the looks modern is how they have been worn.

Julia Roberts tossed on her Chopard treasure with an all-black Louis Vuitton suit with tails. Viola Davis shone in a sunshine yellow off the shoulder Alexander McQueen number and pinned a sexy Boucheron flower clip in her hair. Anne Hathaway paired a massive Bulgari sapphire necklace with a sleek white Armani Privé gown that had a cutout at the waist. And Elle Fanning lit up the carpet in a light pink strapless Armani Privé gown and dazzling Chopard diamond jewels. She finished off the look with a sweet hair ribbon.

Julia Roberts (sadly) didn’t have a movie to promote when she made her appearance on the Cannes red carpet during the Armageddon premiere. She was there as the face of the Swiss jeweler Chopard.

Her massive star power was almost matched by the diamond necklace she wore centering on a ginormous 100-carat yellow diamond.

When I first saw pictures of Viola Davis on the red carpet, I thought she had a real flower in her hair. In fact, the piece is something special from Boucheron.

The Fleur de Paradis hair clip is from the French jeweler’s Carte Blanche High Jewelry Collection that will be unveiled during Couture Week in July. The piece has three amethysts and pavé set yellow and orange sapphires as well as pink and violet stones. The setting is composed of orange lacquer and titanium.

Armageddon star Anne Hathaway is a newly anointed Bvlgari ambassador. For the red carpet she wore the new Mediterranean Reverie necklace from the Italian jeweler.

According to Bvlgari the jewel is “one of the most precious creations ever realized by the Roman jewelry house” which is really saying something considering the firm’s long history of extraordinary jewels. The piece is set with a 107.15-carat cushion-cut Sri Lankan sapphire that is intended to evoke the hues of Capri’s Blue Grotto sea cave.

At the Top Gun: Maverick premiere, Elle Fanning walked the carpet as a guest of the event in diamond jewels from Chopard.

Her pieces included a heart shape diamond choker and a dazzling diamond bracelet.
