Just a couple of weeks before the world premiere of Avengers:Endgame, Irene Neuwirth got an Instagram message from Brie Larson who asked if she could put the jewelry designer in touch with her stylist Samantha McMillen. Irene told the star, “Sure, but it has to be pretty much right away because I am about to go on an African safari for 10 days with little to no access to the internet.” Samantha called almost immediately. She wanted to know if she could commission Irene to make something inspired by Marvel’s Thanos Gauntlet set with the Infinity Stones. Totally up to the challenge of not only the design, but also executing the piece with her production team located halfway around the world Irene said “Yes!” She began by creating the sketches on her Ipad with a pencil en route to Africa. Five days after being on safari, Irene finally had reception at a stop near a river and some hippos. She sent the visuals to Samantha and called her to review the stones and design details.
Next, Irene’s production team in Los Angeles set to work on the process of creating the pieces. They sent pictures of Irene mockups in Africa by cutting out paper samples and putting them on their hands. Then waxes were created. “We had to stop everything else in the workshop in order to get the pieces done on time,” says Irene.
The gems Irene chose for the rings echoing the Infinity Stones were a pink tourmaline, a green tourmaline, an aquamarine and two fire opals. For the bracelet she used one very large citrine surrounded by diamonds. Once the rings were complete, Irene also designed matching Lighting Ridge opal and diamond earrings with the same modern aesthetic. She also whipped up a couple of simple diamond studs for her to wear in her second and third ear piercings.
When Brie Larson, aka Captain Marvel, hit the red carpet on April 22, 2019, fans of the film were thrilled the way the Irene Neuwirth jewels referenced the Thanos Gauntlet and Infinity Stones. They also loved the fact that Scarlett Johansson, otherwise known as the Black Widow, was wearing jewels inspired by the super powerful gems. The looks, however, were not at all coordinated.
