Liza Colón-Zayas’s Jewels Have A Restaurant Connection
Find out how designer Sarah Hendler met ‘The Bear’ star
February 22, 2024—Not all jewelry worn on the red-carpet during Awards Season comes from big companies. There are, on occasion, independents who shine through. And like the old days in Hollywood when stars went to their local favorites, sometimes there is a personal connection to the designer.
The Sarah Hendler jewels The Bear’s Liza Colón-Zayas shone in at the Critics Choice Awards and the Emmys not only have a personal connection there is also an apropos link to restaurants
The jewelry designer—who has a cult following and a stellar list of celebrity credits including Madonna, Meghan Markle, Kristen Bell and Ruth Negga—met Liza through The Bear’s culinary consultant Courtney Storer.
It’s a bit of a restaurant family tree for the background on the introduction which starts with Sarah’s husband Vinny Dotolo who is the Vinny behind the beloved Jon & Vinny restaurants in Los Angeles.
Before Courtney Storer became the culinary consultant for The Bear, which was created by her brother Chris Storer, she spent some time working at Jon & Vinny’s which is how she got to know Sarah.
Sarah not only loved meeting Liza, she also noted, “To be working with someone who is willing to try different looks is a dream and it’s even better when they have short hair.”
At the Critics Choice Awards, Liza wore a tuxedo-style ensemble and a bold Givenchy necklace from the vintage costume section of Sarah’s collection. She also piled on a trio of rings and studs from the fine jewelry Sarah designs.
In the continuation of the old Hollywood mode, when the city felt like a small town, Sarah and Liza met up at the Critics Choice Awards. Sarah happened to be invited by her friend Ruth De Jong, the Oscar nominated production designer of Oppenheimer who also designed Sarah’s studio space.
Being at the Critics Choice Awards gave Sarah the chance to watch Liza accept the Best Comedy Series Award on behalf of The Bear cast. “I was so psyched they won and to be able to see her in the necklace was so great,” says Sarah.
The very next night, when The Bear cast won the Emmy award, Liza Colón-Zayas wore Sarah’s signature Shirley earrings and a heart ring.
This weekend at the Screen Actors Guild Awards, The Bear cast is nominated again. And who knows Liza might just turn up in more of Sarah’s jewelry which feels a little bit like a lucky charm.
