May 7, 2024—The Met Gala has become such a big red carpet that in past years, I have spent days after the fact covering the trends. There is always more looks than at the Oscars. The abundance makes sense on a couple of fronts. Anna Wintour and her fleet of editors at Vogue, as well as the stylists working with the stars curate everything for full impact. And they really cut loose in a way they may not at a serious awards show, because the evening is all about fashion and aligning with the theme of the Costume Institute.
The relatively new thing among fashion critics, and the public, has been to spend a lot of time crowing about how certain stars understood the assignment and others didn’t. This year the theme was pretty easy. It was essentially Spring. The title of the show is Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion.
With the theme front of mind, I chose just a couple handful of jewels among the throngs that really stood out as alive, making unique statements and held their own with the clothes.
A co-chair of the event Jennifer Lopez wore Tiffany & Co. jewels including a diamond and platinum necklace from the Blue Book 2024 Tiffany Celéste Collection that coordinated perfectly with her Schiaparelli Haute Couture gown. The overall effect was something like dew on grass during a chilly Spring morning.
One brooch is not enough anymore for a man to make a jewelry statement. Leon Bridges proved the point in an array of vintage designs from vintage emporium Joseph Saidian & Sons.
Actually one brooch can be enough, if the brooch is by Elsa Jin. Adrien Brody has worn the designer’s work repeatedly and it always makes a spectacular statement.
Amelia Gray, who is the daughter of Harry Hamlin and Lisa Rinna, made a dramatic Met Gala debut. The model tucked strands of her hair under a Messika statement necklace with a giant yellow diamond pendant.
Gabrielle Union mixed several different types of Tiffany designs and amazingly created a beach vibe with her mermaid style Michael Kors gown. The jewels included Paloma Picasso yellow quartz, diamond and platinum earrings made in 1985 from the Tiffany Archives, an Elsa Peretti platinum and diamond starfish brooch and an opal, diamond and platinum bracelet.
Michelle Williams doesn’t usually have a note of whimsy in her red carpet looks, but she switched things up for the Met in a playful pink pixie topped off with a Chanel diamond necklace worn as a headpiece. The jewelry design is one of the original looks Coco Chanel created for her 1932 diamond collection.
Sarah Jessica Parker had on so many diamond jewels in various places on her hair, hat and hands, it’s impossible to capture them all in a single photograph. The designs included vintage Art Deco baguette diamond ray earrings from Briony Raymond and a diamond Alexandra ring from Marlo Laz.
Cardi B made a grand red carpet statement in a giant custom Windowsen gown and turban paired with ginormous emerald and diamond jewels from Kamyen Jewellery and ring from A. Jaffe.
Gigi Hadid lit up her Thom Browne gown with a yellow and white diamond necklace from Chopard. The jewel features 26.24-carats of yellow diamonds and 25.65-carats of white diamonds.
The always daring Chloe Sevigny paired a Victorian style Dilara Fındıkoğlu gown with an ultra modern Ana Khouri diamond and gold necklace.
GEM Award Jewelry Style winner and star of the upcoming film Wicked, Cynthia Erivo filled up her multiple piercings with Roberto Coin diamond jewelry.
Working all the angles in the most imaginative way, Cynthia Erivo put a vintage costume Jennifer Behr dragonfly on the back of her head.
Speaking of costume jewelry, I don’t cover it often but when the designs stand out like the Chole pieces did on Greta Gerwig and Chloe designer Chemena Kamali I feel like they should be noted.
The belle of the Met Ball, Anna Wintour wore vintage diamond necklaces and a vintage floral brooch from S.J. Philips in London. The jewels may not have been “groundbreaking” but they captured the theme perfectly and paired beautifully with her custom Loewe.
