Pomellato Brings Back A 1970s Classic

The Iconica collection is filled with bold gold rings

by Marion Fasel

I have a 1970s soul. In terms of my jewelry that means I just can’t get enough of the modern gold styles that defined those days of disco. Women were entering the work force en masse and jewelry designers started creating ready-to-wear gold for chic nine-to-fivers. There is a modern eternality to what was made during the period. It is the kind of gold jewelry I love to wear day-in and day-out.

Well, you can imagine how thrilled I was when I saw the new Iconica collection from Pomellato. The pieces were inspired by 1970s designs from the jeweler’s archive. In fact, it is the type of look—creative yet classic, perfectly sculpted gold designs—the Italian jeweler became famous for. In the seventies, Pomellato highlighted the imaginative spirit of its collection in ad campaigns including one shot by famed Italian lensman Gian Paolo Barbieri of wave bracelets and necklaces on actress Lily Bistrattin.

The Iconica collection is debuting as part of Pomellato’s 50th anniversary celebrations this year. When I saw it for the first time, I actually gasped. I might have gasped the second time as well. The astonishment came from the fact that this was the jewelry I knew women—including yours truly—really wanted.

There are amazing chain link bracelets and necklaces among the designs, but the rings are what grabbed me. I have been on the hunt for the perfect cigar band with a 70s vibe for about as long as I can remember. Sometimes it is the simplest forms that can be the hardest to find. Well, Iconica brought an end to my search. The collection includes styles in various widths. They come in white gold and Pomellato’s own dreamy rose gold alloy. There is a couple of renditions accented with diamonds set in various shapes including stars and teardrops. A perfect diamond eternity band is even in the mix to layer with the big pieces if you so desire.

“This is the absolute quintessence of creating the perfect circle ring,” says Pomellato’s brilliant CEO Sabina Belli. “It goes beyond a simple ring, it is roundish and sensual.” Truly, it is wonderful to touch and divine to wear.  Yes, dear reader, I got one.
