The Cool Jewels In Rihanna’s Fenty x Puma
It was made with her friend and long-time collaborator Lynn Ban
New York Fashion Week not only served up the new clothing trends for Spring ’18, there were also loads of hot jewelry styles on the runways. Artistic single earrings and glam-over-the-top looks appeared at the shows.
Arguably, the coolest jewelry, however, was served up at the Fenty x Puma extravaganza. Rihanna collaborated on the collection of big, bold colorful baubles, that also maintained a sporty vibe, with her friend Lynn Ban. The key pieces were Industrial Chain Necklaces with a custom oil stain rhodium finish, Sport Cord Chokers, handmade sterling Monster Hoops in oil stain rhodium and pink metallic rhodium Ying-Yang Hoops.
The sensational designer, who is as famous for her wildly chic Instagram as her jewelry, graciously answered my questions about her pieces for Fenty x Puma in the midst of prepping for her next collab during London Fashion Week with Michael Halpern.

Rihanna has been wearing your jewelry for years and I know from your divine Instagram the two of you are friends. When and how did the collab for the Fenty x Puma collection begin?
It started from her very first season in Fall/Winter 2016 all the way through to this fourth season Spring/Summer 2018. Rihanna is the ultimate muse and fashion icon. I’ve done jewelry for her tours, videos and personal wear for years so to be asked was a natural fit and I was thrilled to do Fenty x Puma jewelry.
The collection is the ultimate athleisure line and I love that she always includes jewelry. What does she tell you she is looking for in the designs?
The Fenty x Puma collections are always so distinctly Rihanna and her personal style. Jewelry is always a big part of her style and the jewelry for each collection definitely represents her, what would she wear and style with these looks. Every season is so different, from black diamond Goths to pearl laden Marie Antoinette streetwear to the Gold signet F.U. cliques of Fenty University to the industrial chains and giant hoops of the Motorcross and Surfers of this season.

Can you tell me a little about the behind the scenes process working with Rihanna on styling the models?
She’s very hands on and this is definitely her vision. I’m just bringing her the tools. She will put a pair of Mega Hoops on the model that can carry them, or take off a chain that is overpowering an outfit.
The chains and big hoops this season were massive. Tell me about the designs.
The Mega hoops and chains were supersized this season. I played with a new iridescent finish on the hoops and industrial chain chokers clasped with cords, this futuristic sheen on the polished metal was the perfect finishing touch to the bright color palette of the collection. I designed a Mega Yin Yang hoop to highlight this graphic motif throughout the collection and experimented with a pastel metallic finish. The climbing cord Masai inspired chokers were designed with the collections graphic colors in mind. I wanted to do a high layered choker but instead of using metal, I felt that the utilitarian cord was more modern and highlighted the sporty accents of the clothes.
Your style is as fashion forward as it gets in fine jewelry. Of course, Rihanna is an epic fashion risk-taker. Has she pushed you even further forward in your work?
Rihanna is always on the inspiration board. She definitely pushes me to think outside the box. Jewelry has become so homogeneous that not being basic is what will set you apart.
