Who Made Zoë Kravitz’s Engagement Ring?

The designer of the jewel Channing Tatum gave the actress is an open secret

December 29, 2023— Zoë Kravitz is one of those rare stars that’s a chameleon with jewelry on the red carpet. She coolly tosses on glamorous statement pieces, like 105-carat Colombian and black jade earrings from Lorraine Schwartz, and just as breezily wears a sexy Elsa Peretti gold mesh bra. Now Zoë has an engagement ring, believed to be by Jessica McCormack, that is easily one of the best celebrity rings of 2023 and right up there in the ranks of one of the best of all time.

The press (including yours truly) initially noticed the jewel rather hilariously when Zoë stepped out for a Halloween party at the Chateau Marmont in Los Angeles on October 28 dressed up as Rosemary Woodhouse, the lead character in the 1968 horror classic Rosemary’s Baby, with a knife in her hand and the ring on her finger.

Channing Tatum, who gave her the sparkler, added to the humor of the inadvertent engagement reveal dressed up as the baby for the bash. The couple has been dating since 2021 when they met on the set of Pussy Island, a yet to be released production which marks Zoë’s debut as a director.

Once the world got eyes on the jewel believed to be set with a cushion shape diamond in the 7-carat range, it didn’t take long for people to hypothesize that the piece came from Jessica McCormack.

The designer who hails from New Zealand is based in London where she operates out of a townhouse located at 7 Carlos Place.

In the workshop situated within the building, Jessica oversees master craftsmen making her signature pieces that echo the Georgian cut-down button back settings of the distant past. The designer has made the look her own with contemporary proportions and silhouettes as well as beautifully chosen gems.

Jessica explained the cut-down button back settings to Emily Selter for a 2017 story on The Adventurine:

The technique shapes and encases the back of the diamond in gold, which increases the refraction of the light, producing a magical depth to the stone. This style is very comfortable to wear. The diamond sits low to the finger and close to the skin, and the smooth gold finish enclosing the diamond keeps the stone as sparkly as possible.

The combination of blackened gold and yellow gold in her button back jewels were a detail that quickly led people to the conclusion that the ring came from her collection.

While Jessica McCormack and her office have politely replied “no comment” to the questions about the engagement ring, Zoë’s love of the designer’s work is well documented.

On March 3, 2022, the actress posted a clip on Instagram from Fallon Tonight when she has on several of Jessica’s signature Gypset diamond Hoop Earrings.

The relationship goes back to at least 2021 on Jessica’s Instagram.

One of the most dazzling credits is the diamond pendant earrings Zoë wore to the Met Gala that year. Jessica captioned the photo “ZK x JM Met Ball moment 🖤🔥” which feels like a statement on the fact that the earrings may have been a collaboration as they don’t seem to be in the regular collection.

In a British Vogue story covering the Jessica McCormack jewels Zoë wore at the Met Ball, the actress said: “I live in her jewelry, I really do. Once I put something on, I just could leave it on. I love that Jessica creates these special, unique pieces that look great with a gown, but also a T-shirt. That’s totally my vibe.”

Coincidentally, the 2021 Met Ball was also one of the first occasions when Zoë and Channing were photographed together. I like to think Channing noticed the beauty of the jewels and how much Zoë loved them, but perhaps that’s just the romantic in me.
