Jewelry Star of 2019: Scarlett Johansson

The actress loves imaginative jewelry by independent designers

Scarlett Johansson really loves jewelry. You can tell she loves it because of all the piercings in her ears. You can also tell how much she loves jewelry by the delicate tattoo of a chain link bracelet with a Thor Hammer charm on her right wrist. Of course, the main way you can tell how much Scar Jo loves jewelry is by what she wears.

The Avengers actress has been making interesting jewelry choices for a long time. A couple of my favorite moments from the past happened at the Oscars. In 2015 she wore a floral Piaget earpiece. And in 2005 Johansson sported a vintage star tiara from Fred Leighton.

This year Scarlett’s love of jewelry was on display more regularly than it has ever been in the past. Of course, there was that moment in July when the public got a first look at her engagement ring from Colin Jost. The 11-carat light brown diamond set on a swoosh of ceramic by Taffin designer James de Givenchy is unlike anything any actress has ever worn on the third finger of her left hand. It is imaginative and grand and one of the greatest in Hollywood history.

The engagement ring, however, was far from the only jewelry event of the year for the actress. While she was busy promoting Avengers: Endgame and teasing Black Widow as well as doing all the press for her roles in Marriage Story and Jojo Rabbit, she wore one interesting jewel after another. Every single choice the star and her stylist Molly Dickson made came from independent jewelry establishments.

For one of her last 2019 red carpet appearances, Scarlett wore a stunning pair of earrings by Taffin. (Seen in the photo above.) Neither Scarlett or James de Givenchy has publicly spoken about her engagement ring that was first identified by yours truly. Scar Jo wearing the Taffin earrings felt like a hat tip to the talented jewelry designer. To me it was a poetic ending to Scarlett’s jewelry year.

Just 13 short days after the amazing Greek designer Nikos Koulis debuted his Feelings collection in Athens it appeared on the red carpet. Scarlett, who has worn Nikos’s jewels in the past, put on two pieces from the new collection for an April 10 Avengers Endgame Fan Event in London.

For the April 22 World premiere of Avengers: Endgame, Scarlett wore a jewel inspired by the Thanos Gauntlet. It was a gift commissioned by Colin Jost from Scarlett’s friend, jewelry designer Sonia Boyajian. Find out more about the piece and the back story here.

On July 20, Scarlett  stepped out for the first time publicly in her engagement ring from Colin Jost at the 2019 Comic-Con International in San Diego, California.

Scarlett wore the Missy Diamond Ear Piece by Ana Khouri for the screening of the film Marriage Story at the Venice Film Festival on August 29.

Scarlett wore layers of vintage jewels from Fred Leighton at TIFF premiere of Jojo Rabbit on September 3.

Scarlett wore earrings by Irene Neuwirth to the TIFF premiere of Marriage Story on September 8.

For the October 4 premiere of Marriage Story at the 57th New York Film Festival, Scarlett once again wore earrings by Nikos Koulis.

Scarlett wore pendant earrings by Hanut Singh among other earrings for the October 27 Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’ 11th Annual Governors Awards.
