The Jewelry Splendor and Surprises at Cannes
Among the big names there were some independent designers
May 25, 2023—By over-the-top Cannes jewelry standards, the best looks this year at the film festival were pretty tame. Don’t get me wrong, there was a lot of jewelry and fashion—for lack of a better word—vulgarity on the red carpet. There was even a messy controversy about one Bollywood star who flashed a copy of a famous pair of crocodiles. But I am choosing to overlook it.
The A-list kept their jewels low-key glam. An airy diamond bib necklaces, a pair of earrings that swept up the lobe and pendant earrings that reeked of the Jazz Age were a few of the gemmy items that caught my eye. It’s no surprise that these jewels were made by the biggest names in the business.
The surprises were the jewels by independent designers who had their moment in the South of France sun. Find out more about below.
American actress Lily Gladstone, who is of Blackfeet and Nimíipuu heritage, stars alongside Leonardo DiCaprio in Martin Scorsese’s Killers of the Flowermoon that Vogue proclaimed will be “a juggernaut of Awards Season.”
For the Cannes screening of the film, Lily wore earrings by Native American fashion artist Jamie Okuma that were real scene stealers.
I can’t say I’ve ever noticed Adrien Brody wearing brooches in the past. Well, now he is really going for the style in a big way with the jewels of Elsa Jin. He wore one of her brooches recently at an event and did so again at the screening of Wes Anderson’s Asteroid City in Cannes.
The word sculptural is often used to describe jewelry but in the case of Elsa Jin’s brooches it really has meaning.
Scarlett Johansson is a jewelry lover. In 2019 she was The Adventurine’s jewelry star of the year. She has one of the best engagement rings of any Hollywood actress ever. And now ScarJo is a face of David Yurman.
For the screening of Asteroid City, she wore a pair of Yurman’s Liberty High Jewelry earrings which I suspect are inspired by the Statue of Liberty. The look is perfect for Scarlett who enjoys envelope pushing jewelry styles.
Viola Davis has long been one of the great talents in Hollywood. Over the last several years she has also evolved into a real style star of the red carpet.
For the premiere of Monster, she wore Chopard diamond front-facing hoops and a grand flower brooch on her one shoulder gown.
For the screening of Killers of the Flower Moon, Kirsten Dunst joined her husband Jesse Plemons who is one of the stars of the production.
The actress who has made countless style turns in statement jewels throughout her career wore a platinum and diamond Cartier Collection bib necklace made in 2004 with Briony Raymond diamond stud earrings.
Elle Fanning always turns up the glamour for her appearances on the Cannes red carpet. At the opening night screening of the French film Jeanne du Barry she wore Cartier.
Her jewels included a Cartier Tradition Perles de Diamants necklace made in 1999, a vintage diamond bracelet made in 1930 and an Indomptables de Cartier ring.
Cate Blanchett is the face of Louis Vuitton jewelry designed by Francesca Amfitheatrof and she wears it well.
For Killers of the Flower Moon screening, which she attended as a guest, Cate wore a diamond earring that swept up the lobe and showed it off by keeping her hair behind her ear.
Saint Laurent made their presence known in Cannes during the first couple of days of the film festival by dressing a number of celebrities. They were making some noise because of their involvement with a few productions. Among the stars no one accessorized the clothes quite as beautifully as Laura Harrier.
For the Monster screening she wore a black Saint Laurent number with pendant earrings from Bulgari.
Julia Garner always stands out on the red carpet with her platinum blonde hair and fabulous jewels.
When she attended the screening of Asteroid City, the star wore High Jewelry from Gucci with an Art Deco vibe. It played up her 1920s movie star look.
Jennifer Lawrence was in Cannes to support the documentary about Afghan women she produced titled Anatomy of a Fall.
For the red carpet she wore a classic Dior ball gown with a ribbon diamond necklace from the French house and flip flops from The Row that caused a sensation.
For the photocall of Anatomy of a Fall, Jennifer Lawrence once again wore Dior—a house she has been the face of for years.
She squeezed in a surprise by pairing the dress with Cocktail Drop earrings from New York based designer Alison Lou.
