The Jewelry in ‘Rocketman’ Is Worth Millions

The baubles in the biopic reflect Elton John’s massive personal collection

On some days during the filming of Rocketman, there were millions of dollars-worth of jewelry and watches on the set. While that may sound like a lot, and it is, the amount only reflected a small fraction of the jewelry that has been part of Elton John’s collection over the years.

The pop star was, and still most likely is, an enthusiastic jewelry and watch collector. The details of his veracious appetite for Art Deco jewelry and bold contemporary designs from some of the biggest names in field is well-known. He wore a lot of the jewelry for all to see. He also sold a lot of jewelry from his collection at Sotheby’s. Entire catalogues were devoted to his castoffs in sales in 1988 and 1993. I have no insider facts on why Elton deaccessioned so much, but I suspect part of the reason was house cleanings so he could refresh his jewel box.

For Rocketman costume designer Julien Day, resourced all the fine jewels for the movie from Chopard. “I was so pleased to have been able to have access to authentic pieces of jewelry to emphasize the outfits,” explained Day. “I chose to work with Chopard as this was the ideal jeweler and watchmaker for this project: they are daring in their creativity and colorful which was quintessential to tie in with my vision.”
