How the Jewelry World Coped This Week

Designers shared their creativity, humor and compassion

by Marion Fasel

March 20, 2020—It’s been a brutal week. The coronavirus pandemic forced the jewelry world, along with so many other industries, to stop business as usual and work from home if possible. During this shift, that is clearly going to last awhile, some of our favorite designers brightened up our social media feeds with their activities.

Many mobilized into action to help various charities. At press time, 111 designers had joined the movement to donate a portion of their proceeds from sales to No Kid Hungry. Others showed us the jewels they were working on, shared recipes or outfits of the day, part of a mini trend to keep spirits up with sartorial splendor.

See some of the moments that we enjoyed during the week below.

You will rarely if ever see Elie Top without a tie, usually he wears a jacket and sometimes a full suit. That rule holds true now as the designer is “Confiné mais Habillé” or confined at home in Paris.

When I once asked Elie about his formality, he explained he has worn a tie since the early days of his career when he worked as a design assistant for Yves Saint Laurent. In fact, Saint Laurent told Lou Lou de la Falise to tell Elie, he could wear a sweater some days if he liked. “I continued to wear ties,” explained Elie. “Maybe it’s because I dream of a certain way I want to live.

Another highlight on Elie’s Instagram this week was a video of him at sketching.

Stephen Webster, who has been posting hilarious videos of his time in confinement in England, got serious yesterday about a cause and infused the humor in it as well. In his caption for the above photo he said “For those of you, like me who want to follow coronavirus avoidance protocol but still like to make an effort, we are supplying a pair of NHS approved protective gloves with every ring purchased through our e commerce channel for the foreseeable future, while stocks of rings and gloves last. We are also delighted to be donating 10% of proceeds to mental health charity MIND.”
