Dakota Johnson Wears An Epic Belperron Diamond

She tossed on the 65-carat treasure for The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon

January 24, 2024—I don’t think I’ve ever covered the jewelry worn on a late-night talk show. But then again, no one has ever dared to wear anything like the 65-carat Belperron Diamond Necklace Dakota Johnson tossed on with a black corseted Wardrobe.NYC mini-dress for her appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.

From the clips I’ve seen, Dakota and Jimmy didn’t talk about her necklace which I am trying to understand. I guess The Tonight Show isn’t E! Live From The Red Carpet.

If I had a chance to interview Dakota in the ensemble, the first thing I would have wanted to know was did her outfit somehow relate to her role in the forthcoming Marvel movie Madame Web? Was she doing a little cosplay as actors do so often nowadays with their clothes? The diamond, after all, is not every night, late-night fare.

We will have to wait and see if a diamond is part of that narrative. As for the rest of the details, I dove into them below.

One of the greatest talents of the 20th century Suzanne Belperron’s designs remain influential, because they look as modern now as they did when she conceived them.

Yet the collection, which is still made today from her original designs, is one of those “If You Know You Know” situations. Few know about it outside circles devoted to iconoclastic fine jewelry. Belperron doesn’t often loan things to be worn on the red carpet. It’s a very exclusive label with a small production and devoted following.

Kate Young, Dakota’s stylist, is astute and knows all about Belperron. Just a few weeks ago she styled Michelle Williams in a black Schiaparelli and a Spiral Torque gold and pearl Belperron necklace. The pairing had historical relevance. Elsa Schiaparelli was not only a friend of Suzanne Belperron, she was also a client.

The connection with Schiaparelli also links to the Toggle Torque necklace Dakota wore. Elsa Schiaparelli owned one of the original renditions of the designs created around 1933. She even went so far as to model the jewel for a feature in Vogue Paris on Belperron’s creations.

The big difference between the design owned by Schiap and the rendition sported by Dakota is the epic old mine brilliant-cut, fancy light-yellow diamond weighing over 65 carats at the center of the toggle. The original version of the design has a pavé-set diamond ball in the same position.

The way the important gem is set at the center of the black lacquer Toggle Torque design featuring a diamond and platinum wrapped detail at the side shows Belperron is still an iconoclastic House. It takes guts and total restraint to set a big diamond in such a daring and minimalist design.

The price for the piece worn by Dakota is an eye-watering $2,750,000. If that is out of reach, Belperron makes Toggle Torques in the same mode as the design Schiaparelli once owned for about 18 times less which is still expensive but considerably less than the Belperron Diamond.
